Introduction
With the globalization of education, online education has emerged as a significant learning mode. However, facilitating the integration of international students into the classroom and promoting in-depth communication among students remain key issues. In this process, culture undoubtedly serves as the most optimal bridge. Recognizing cultural diversity signifies identity affirmation and helps students understand the thoughts and behaviors shaped by different cultural backgrounds (Gay, 2018). Therefore, establishing a teaching system in the classroom that incorporates festivals as part of the curriculum can enhance student engagement and increase the interactivity of the course, making students more willing to participate in classroom discussions and providing them with a more intuitive understanding of cultural diversity and integration.
Cultural Celebrations as a Pedagogical Tool
Research has shown that integrating cultural celebrations into education creates inclusive learning environments that support international students’ social and academic integration (Banks, 2015). Each festival has a rich history, culture, and tradition behind it. Incorporating them as part of the teaching curriculum enables students to better understand the values and social customs of different cultures. For instance, when studying the theme of festivals, students not only learn about the origin, customs, and celebration methods of the festivals but also can delve into discussions on social phenomena related to the festivals to explore how they reflect the social structure and family relationships of a country or culture.
Teaching Methods for Integrating Festivals into the Curriculum
- Teachers can display the names of festivals celebrated worldwide on a given day in the course syllabus to enhance the classroom atmosphere.
- Â Conduct interactive discussions via online platforms, such as Zoom, allowing students to share how festivals are celebrated in their countries and discuss how they influence daily life and social interactions.
Future Applications in Online Learning
As digital education continues to evolve, online learning should increasingly emphasize cultural inclusivity to enhance the learning experiences of international students (Zawacki-Richter & Jung, 2020). The application prospects of cultural festivals as educational tools are extensive, and future online courses can:
- Leverage the uniqueness of festivals to design highly interactive and culturally enriching learning experiences.
- Promote global awareness and cultural dialogue in international classrooms while helping students develop a stronger cultural identity and a global perspective.
- Extend beyond English language instruction and be applied across multiple disciplines, such as sociology, history, and literature.
Despite ongoing advancements in global education, cultural celebrations will play a crucial role in shaping inclusive and interactive online learning experiences.
Conclusion
Under the rapid development of the era of artificial intelligence (AI), empathy has become more important than ever before. This is the most significant distinction between humans and robots. Cultural identity and understanding are the key factors in cultivating empathy. International students will be more willing to express their viewpoints and engage in in-depth interaction and communication with others when their cultural backgrounds are recognized and respected. Therefore, integrating cultural topics into the classroom, especially through cultural carriers such as festivals that carry symbolic meanings, not only helps international students feel a sense of belonging and identity but also promotes their more active participation in the courses and forms a closer learning community.
